In1984 Yass had a high Aboriginal population and its believed the name Yass was derived from the Aboriginal word “Yharr” meaning “running water”. We were not going to stay at Yass, it was a quick stop over for shopping since our original plan was to go to a town call Wombat and free camp there, however, Natasha from the information centre was awesome, not only did she tell as about a free camp area in Yass, minutes from the town centre, opposite the pool (which as we found out later is the place to be in Yass) but also helped us with wifi. The free camp was a 48 hr stop over, no power or toilets. The place had plenty of shade and it was right next to an oval which was great for the dogs.

Yass is a beautiful town, lots of history, we did the historical walk around town and visited many of the buildings built around the 1800’s by colonial architects such as James Barnet and Edmund Blacket.

Our couple of days were spent home schooling in the morning, walking around town and museum during the day and the pool early evening.
The pool: the place to be! Everyone in town comes after school, after work, they have movie nights, pool parties, exercises classes, bbq everything. As I sneakily tried to join the aqua aerobics class I could not help but dance under water to the loud speakers playing 80’s music….who would have thought I could work out singing to Laura Branigan “Gloria”.

Like always we came across a lovely couple Trev and Tina, full of life and living it, they are from SA, there is definitely a common trait in the people we meet, or are caravanning, always friendly, always willing to help and proud Aussies, why wouldn’t you be, you know first hand how beautiful this county is!
Not a bad place to stay, feels so far away yet is only about 6 hrs from Melbourne! Thanks Yass.
